The Syracuse International Film Festival 48 Hour Film Competition Rules & Regulations



1. Eligible Work


  1. The Work must be new and original, 3 to 7 minutes long, excluding end credits.
  2. The Work must not infringe on any 3rd-party rights, or contain elements copyrighted to others without permission.
  3. Music must be original or rights must be obtained.
  4. The Work must be suitable for all ages.
  5. Except for trailers, the Work should not be distributed or screened in other venues prior to screening at the Film Festival.
  6. Any work of any team may, in the sole discretion of the Syracuse International Film Festival, be disqualified for any reason.



2. Participant Team


  1. Teams are limited to five people, but can have an unlimited number of actors. All participants must be volunteers.
  2. Any type and any number of video or film cameras may be used, including mobile devices.
  3. Releases must be secured from parents and school for talent, crew, music, locations, and other necessary personnel and items, and be received by the Syracuse International Film Festival by October 4th, 2019.  For minors, signature must be from a parent or legal guardian.
  4. SIFF employees, directors or officers or their family members are not eligible to participate.
  5. All costs associated with the production of the work are the responsibility of the Team.



3. Creation, Submission, & Judging


  1. Each team must have a representative at the starting event, at 7 pm on October 4th, 2019 at the Redhouse Theater, 400 S Salina St, Syracuse, NY 13202.  This is when Syracuse International Film Festival officials reveal the three Elements that must appear in the film.
  2. The competition takes place in the 48 Hour period from 7 pm, October 4th, 2019, to 7 pm October 6th, 2019. Each team must complete shooting and editing of its film, and post it to our website by Monday at 7 pm.  Work not submitted by deadline will be deemed ineligible and not considered part of the competition.
  3. All work on the film must take place during the 48 hour period, including script, rehearsal, costume and set design, shooting and editing.  The only exceptions are organizing cast, crew, and equipment.
  4. Eligible Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: Artistic Merit (e.g., Story, Creativity, Entertainment Value) (45%); Technical Merit (30%); Adherence to the Assignment (25%).



4. Liability and Indemnification


  1. By submitting a Work, the participating Team warrants that it owns all rights to the Work being entered, and has obtained permission from each person who appears in it.
  2. No responsibility or liability is assumed by the Syracuse International Film Festival, Inc., for technical problems or malfunctions of any kind, including any typographical errors in the announcement of prizes or these Official Rules, or any inaccurate or incorrect data contained on the Web Site or social media sites maintained by it.
  3. By participating in the Project, the Team agrees to release, indemnify and hold Syracuse International Film Festival, Inc., harmless from any and all claims, damages or liabilities arising from or relating to such Team’s participation in the Project.
